Lockport's map is shaped by water that has been engineered. The Des Plaines River, the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal and the much wider Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal run side by side through the valley. The old town sits on the bluff just above them, laid out in a grid that follows the valley's alignment.
The Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848 and linked Lake Michigan to the Mississippi system. Lockport served as the canal's headquarters, and the town takes its name from the locks built here. Parts of the original canal and its towpath survive, and a historic district preserves many of the older stone buildings from that period.
