Radiating roads
Main roads leave the town in several directions across the plain. They form strong lines that give the map a star-like structure around the centre.

Manbij Map Poster & Print
Manbij lies in northern Syria, on the broad, gently rolling plain between Aleppo and the Euphrates, which flows some distance to the east. The land around the town is open and mostly farmland. On the map, the built area stands out as a compact, roughly rounded mass of streets, surrounded by fields and roads leading outward.
The site is very old. In classical times the town was known as Hierapolis Bambyce, a centre of the cult of the Syrian goddess Atargatis, and it appears in writings from the Roman period. Very little of that ancient city can be read in today's street plan, which is mostly the result of much more recent growth.
A Manbij map poster shows a town defined by its roads as much as by its centre. Routes toward Aleppo, the Euphrates crossings and neighbouring towns cut across the plain in long lines. The result is a clear, graphic sheet, with a dense core and a wide, calm margin of countryside.

Compact core
The central district is dense and irregular, with shorter streets and tighter blocks than the newer neighbourhoods that have grown around it.
Open plain
Flat farmland surrounds the town on all sides. It leaves calm open space around the streets, which makes the town's outline easy to read.
