Martinez sits on the southern shore of the Carquinez Strait, where the waters of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers narrow on their way to San Francisco Bay. The historic downtown occupies a small grid of blocks near the water, hemmed in by the railway along the shore and by the steep hills rising immediately behind. Newer neighbourhoods spread south through the valleys.
Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County and has a few well-known claims. The naturalist John Muir lived here for many years, and his house is now a national historic site. The town also claims to be the birthplace of the martini, and the baseball player Joe DiMaggio was born here. The Benicia-Martinez Bridge crosses the strait just to the east.
