Die Karte
Maubeuge lies in the Nord department of Hauts-de-France, a few kilometres from the Belgian border, and the Sambre river runs right through it. The town's most striking feature from above is its bastioned enceinte, a fortification built under Louis XIV to designs by Vauban. Much of the ramparts and the moats survive, and on a street map they show up as a sharp angular belt that no modern street grid could produce.
Maubeuge was besieged in 1914 and badly damaged in 1940, and large parts of the centre were rebuilt after the Second World War. That history shows in the plan. Inside the fortifications the streets are fairly regular and open, while the ramparts themselves stay intact at the edge. Beyond the walls, suburbs and industrial districts spread out along the river valley and the roads towards Belgium.
A Maubeuge map poster shows these layers clearly. The sharp outline of the bastions frames the rebuilt centre, the Sambre adds a soft curve across the composition, and the outer neighbourhoods fill the space around it with a looser texture. Among the fortifications are the Porte de Mons, a historic gateway, and a zoo set within the old defences, which makes the green belt around the centre more than decoration.
The bastioned walls form a crisp polygon of angles and moats around the centre, one of the clearest surviving examples of seventeenth-century military geometry drawn on a French town map.
The river crosses the town in a gentle curve, separating districts and giving the composition a single flowing line against the straight edges of the fortifications.
After heavy damage in 1940, the area inside the walls was largely rebuilt, which explains its fairly orderly streets set within the much older defensive outline.
