Milos is a volcanic island in the south-west Cyclades, and its shape shows it. The land curves around a large, deep bay that enters from the north-west and fills much of the island's centre. This makes a rough horseshoe or ring. The western half is wild and hilly with few roads, while most villages cluster in the east.
Adamas, the port, sits on the inner shore of the bay. Above it, Plaka and the neighbouring villages spread across a hill with a small castle at the top. Below them, the ancient site near Klima is where a farmer found the Venus de Milo in 1820. The statue is now in the Louvre.
A Milos map poster also traces the island's many coves, shaped by volcanic rock and mining. Sarakiniko on the north coast is known for its smooth white stone, and Kleftiko in the south-west for its sea arches. Klima has a row of fishermen's houses built at the water's edge, with boat garages on the ground floor.
