Mobile sits on the west bank of the Mobile River where it opens into Mobile Bay, on Alabama's short stretch of Gulf Coast. Its map is framed by water to the east: the river, the port and shipyards, and the wide delta of channels and marsh across the river. From the downtown grid, main streets run west through older neighbourhoods toward newer suburbs.
Founded by the French in 1702, Mobile is one of the oldest cities on the Gulf Coast and lays claim to the oldest organised Mardi Gras celebration in the United States. Its historic districts are known for live oaks shading streets such as Government Street, and the battleship USS Alabama is moored across the river at the head of the bay.
