Valley-floor main street
Corso Umberto I runs along the bottom of the former riverbed through Modica Bassa. It forms the town's main axis and the strongest line on the map.

Modica Map Poster & Print
Modica lies in the southeast of Sicily, in the rugged limestone country of the Hyblaean plateau. On a map, its shape is set by the ravines that meet at its heart. Modica Bassa fills the valley floor, where streams once ran before being covered over after a severe flood in 1902. Modica Alta climbs the ridges above in tight bands of houses that follow the contours.
After the earthquake of 1693, Modica was rebuilt in the late Baroque style. It is one of the towns of the Val di Noto listed together by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of San Giorgio, with its great flight of steps, is its best-known building. The town is also famous for its grainy, cold-worked chocolate, made to a traditional method.
A Modica map poster makes the town's dramatic terrain visible without contour lines. The long main street along the valley floor, the stacked lanes of the upper town and the stairways between them appear as a pattern that is recognisably Sicilian. In black and white, the density of the centre stands out against the open hills around it.

Terraced upper town
Modica Alta's houses follow the ridges in narrow, curving rows. This creates a layered pattern that shows the steepness of the site even on a flat print.
Ravines and stairways
The town is split by deep limestone valleys. Stepped lanes and stairs connect the upper and lower halves, and they appear as short, steep links in the street network.
