Medina alleys
The old quarter's lanes are so narrow and closely packed that they form the densest part of the poster, a fine mesh of paths near the water.

Die Karte
Moutsamoudou Map Poster & Print
Moutsamoudou, often written Mutsamudu, is the capital of Anjouan, one of the islands of the Comoros in the Mozambique Channel. It is the island's main port. From above, the town is squeezed into a narrow strip between the sea and the steep volcanic slopes that rise sharply behind it, which leaves little flat land for streets.
The historic core, known as the medina, is a dense tangle of narrow alleys and stone houses in the Swahili and Arab tradition of the East African coast, with mosques close to the waterfront. Above it stands a citadel built in the late eighteenth century, once used to defend the town against raids from the sea.
A Moutsamoudou map poster captures the tension between hill and sea that defines the place. It shows the intricate old quarter by the harbour, newer neighbourhoods climbing the valleys, and the coastline running in a clear line along the bottom of the frame. It is an unusual subject, detailed and compact.

Harbour front
The port and its quays mark the town's edge on the sea. From here ferries and cargo boats connect Anjouan to the other islands and beyond.
Steep valleys
Behind the town, green slopes rise quickly and newer houses follow narrow valleys uphill. This gives the map a strong contrast between the built-up shore and open hillside.
