Mutxamel lies a short distance inland from Alicante, in the Valencian Community, on the edge of the historic huerta that once supplied the city with fruit and vegetables. On a map the town's compact old centre is surrounded by a patchwork of small plots, winding rural lanes and scattered houses, with newer residential areas stretching toward the neighbouring towns.
The huerta was shaped by centuries of irrigation, and traces of that system still influence the street pattern. Lanes follow former watercourses and property boundaries rather than a planned grid, and old country estates sit among orchards and gardens. A seasonal river, dry for much of the year, crosses the area and appears on the map as a narrow line winding through the fields.
Low hills rise to the north and west, framing the town as the land climbs away from the coast.
