The river runs past the town centre on its way to the sea, and the valley rises steeply on either side. From above, Neath is a compact centre with terraced streets spreading along the valley floor and up the lower slopes.
The area has a long industrial history, and it shows on the map in the form of canals. The Neath Canal and the Tennant Canal run through the valley, drawn as thin lines parallel to the river.
