Opa-locka lies in northern Miami-Dade County, Florida, and has one of the most unusual origins of any American city. Aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss founded it in the 1920s and developed it around a theme inspired by the Arabian Nights. The street plan reflects that ambition. Curving and crescent-shaped roads in the original town set it apart from the grids that surround it.
Many streets still carry names taken from the stories, such as Sharazad Boulevard and Ali Baba Avenue. The city also has a large collection of Moorish Revival buildings, the best known being City Hall with its domes, arches and minarets. A number of these original buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
On the map, the city's most prominent feature is the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, whose long runways form a large geometric shape at its edge.
