Ostróda sits in the lake district of Warmia-Masuria, at the southern end of Lake Drwęckie, a long, narrow body of water that dominates the map. The town wraps around the lake shore and the Drwęca river, with the old centre close to the water and residential districts climbing gently away from it.
Its best-known feature is the Elbląg Canal, the nineteenth-century waterway that links Ostróda with Elbląg and the Vistula Lagoon. The canal is famous for its inclined planes, where boats are carried overland on rail cradles. Near the waterfront stands the Teutonic castle, a reminder of the town's medieval origins.
