Its centre is laid out as a steady orthogonal grid, a plan common to towns that grew quickly in the São Paulo interior during the coffee and railway era. Blocks are even, streets run straight, and the rhythm carries on outward through newer neighbourhoods.
The railway is what shaped the town. Ourinhos grew as a junction on lines serving the interior and northern Paraná.
