It is a Poqomam Maya town, and its layout keeps the classic Guatemalan pattern: a central plaza with the church, a grid of streets around it, and neighbourhoods that loosen into farmland and steeper ground at the edges.
The town's best-known feature is the enormous ceiba tree that shades its central square and market, a landmark often pictured in guides to Guatemala. The volcanic landscape of the region is close by, with Pacaya to the east, and the terrain around Palín tilts and folds, so the tidy central grid soon gives way to curving roads.
