Pavlovsk Map Poster & Print
Pavlovsk stands in the south of Voronezh Oblast, where the Osered river flows into the Don. The town's layout reflects that meeting of waters. Streets gather along the banks, and the broad Don floodplain, with its side channels, small lakes and meadows, takes up a large share of the surrounding landscape.
The town began in the early eighteenth century as a fortress and shipyard founded under Peter the Great. It was later renamed in honour of the future Emperor Paul. Today Pavlovsk is a district centre, known in the region for granite quarrying nearby and for its setting on one of Russia's great rivers.
A Pavlovsk map poster traces the river bends and the regular blocks of the town centre, which follows the fairly orderly plan typical of provincial Russian towns. Bridges, rail lines and roads add strong linear accents. The floodplain gives the composition wide areas of calm and a strong sense of the Don's scale.

Floodplain meadows
Low, water-cut land along the Don spreads out beyond the streets. Its side channels and small lakes appear as delicate flowing shapes.
Orderly centre
The central streets follow a largely regular plan of blocks. The pattern is common to provincial Russian towns and reads clearly in black and white.
