Plano lies north of Dallas on the flat prairie of North Texas. Its map is organised by a large grid of arterial roads, roughly a mile apart, that divide the city into square sections. Inside each square, residential streets loop and curve around parks and schools, so the overall pattern looks like a series of framed, intricate panels.
Major highways cross the grid. US 75 runs north–south through the eastern side, the Dallas North Tollway crosses the west, and the President George Bush Turnpike cuts across the south. Creeks wind diagonally through the city, and their wooded corridors, with parks and trails along the banks, break the straight lines of the roads.
Plano's small historic downtown, around 15th Street, sits beside a DART light rail station. In the west, the Legacy area hosts corporate campuses, including Toyota's North American headquarters.
