Poughkeepsie sits on the east bank of the Hudson River, roughly halfway between New York City and Albany. From above, the city climbs from the waterfront in a loose grid, with Main Street running inland from the river and neighbourhoods spreading across the higher ground to the east. The Fall Kill winds through the city on its way to the Hudson, adding a small, twisting line to the pattern.
Two crossings dominate the riverfront. The Mid-Hudson Bridge carries road traffic to the west bank, and just to the north the former railroad bridge now serves as the Walkway Over the Hudson, one of the longest elevated pedestrian bridges in the world. On a map they appear as two parallel spans over wide water, a striking composition on their own.
The city is the northern terminus of the Metro-North Hudson Line, and Vassar College lies just to the east in the Town of Poughkeepsie, its campus visible as a green expanse among residential streets.
