Radnor Township lies on Philadelphia's Main Line, the string of suburbs that grew up along the old Pennsylvania Railroad west of the city. On a map it looks nothing like a grid. Roads curve around hills and stream valleys, driveways end in large wooded lots, and the pattern loosens and tightens from one neighbourhood to the next, following the land rather than a surveyor's ruler.
Two long lines hold the township together: the commuter rail line and Lancaster Avenue running roughly alongside it. Stations and small commercial strips cluster where the two meet. Between them and beyond, the land breaks into winding residential streets, school grounds and the lawns of institutions. The campus of Villanova University, one of the best-known landmarks in the area, sits within the township.
