Saky lies on the flat steppe of western Crimea, a few kilometres inland from the Black Sea coast north of Yevpatoria. The most striking feature on its map is Saky Lake, a broad, shallow salt lake next to the town, divided by dams into sections. The town's streets spread in a mostly regular pattern along its shore.
Saky has been known since the nineteenth century for its therapeutic mud, taken from the lake bed and used in the town's sanatoriums. That history shaped the layout: a resort area with parks and treatment buildings sits near the water, while residential districts and industrial areas extend beyond it across the open steppe.
