The eastern strait
A narrow band of water separates the island from Perama and Piraeus. It is the setting of the ancient sea battle and of today's constant ferry traffic.

Die Karte
Salamis Island Map Poster & Print
Salamis lies in the Saronic Gulf, very close to the Attica coast. Only a narrow channel separates its eastern shore from Perama and the port area of Piraeus. The outline is unusually irregular. Long headlands and deep bays wrap around a central inlet, so the island curls in on itself like a loose horseshoe rather than forming a simple block of land.
The main town, Salamina, spreads around a sheltered bay on the western side. Smaller settlements and holiday houses line most of the coves. Ferries cross the eastern strait all day, and those short routes to the mainland are clearly visible in a Salamis Island map poster, next to the dense street pattern of the Athens metropolitan area.
The island gave its name to the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. In the narrow waters off its eastern coast, the Greek fleet defeated the much larger Persian navy. The strait where that battle took place is still one of the busiest shipping lanes in Greece.

Folded coastline
Deep bays and long promontories give Salamis one of the most intricate outlines in the Saronic Gulf. It looks almost like lace against the surrounding sea.
Salamina town
The main town fills the curve of a western bay. Its tight grid of streets forms the densest patch of the island map.

Warum Salamis Island
Eine Karte mit Bedeutung
Salamis is a good choice for readers of classical history and for Athenians with family ties to the island. It also suits anyone who has made the short ferry crossing. The print links ancient events to a landscape that is still lived in and still busy.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with a family name or a date, and pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand give the Greek coastline a warmer, softer tone.
