Dense lanes
Much of the district is made up of narrow, irregular lanes between closely built homes, a fine-grained pattern that fills the map with detail from edge to edge.

Sambizanga Map Poster & Print
Sambizanga is one of the older districts of Luanda, in the north of the Angolan capital close to the city's port. On a map it appears as a tightly packed urban fabric where formal avenues meet neighbourhoods of irregular lanes and closely built houses, the informal settlements known locally as musseques. The pattern is dense and fine-grained, quite unlike the planned blocks of the colonial centre nearby.
The district holds a particular place in Angolan culture. Sarah Maldoror's 1972 film Sambizanga, set at the start of the armed struggle against colonial rule, took its name from the neighbourhood, and the area remains closely tied to that period of the country's history. Today it is also shaped by port traffic and the large roads that run along its edges.
A Sambizanga map poster captures the intricate texture of a Luanda neighbourhood that few maps ever show in detail. The narrow lanes and irregular blocks produce a dense, almost woven pattern that looks striking in black and white. For people who grew up here, it is a way to hold on to the streets of home while the city around them keeps changing.

Main avenues
Broader roads cross and border the district, forming a firmer frame of straight lines around the irregular neighbourhoods they enclose.
Near the port
Sambizanga lies close to the port of Luanda, and the large open shapes of wharves and storage areas on the waterfront contrast with the tight residential streets inland.

Warum Sambizanga
Eine Karte mit Bedeutung
Luanda has grown enormously, and many people whose families come from Sambizanga now live in other districts or other countries. A map of the old neighbourhood keeps its streets in view, a personal reference to a place with a significant role in Angolan life.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be changed, to a family name, a street or a year. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and order a $9 digital download or a printed poster on matte paper.
