Fishpond patchwork
Dozens of rectangular ponds, separated by narrow bunds, fill the lowland. They create a geometric grid of water that makes this part of Hong Kong immediately recognisable from above.

Die Karte
San Tin lies in the northern New Territories, in the Yuen Long district, a short distance from the Shenzhen River and the boundary with mainland China. For centuries it has been associated with the Man clan. Their villages and ancestral buildings are among the best-preserved traditional settlements in Hong Kong. The best-known is Tai Fu Tai, a nineteenth-century mansion that is a declared monument.
The map here is unusual for Hong Kong. Instead of dense tower blocks, there is a patchwork of rectangular fishponds and small village clusters. Major transport lines run through the area, with the San Tin Highway and roads leading toward the Lok Ma Chau crossing cutting across the flat ground. Just beyond the river, the scale changes abruptly into the dense urban grid of Shenzhen.
A San Tin map poster captures that edge condition: water and old villages on one side, highways and a cross-border skyline on the other. The area is also the focus of large planned development in the Northern Metropolis. A map drawn now records a landscape that is likely to change significantly.
Dozens of rectangular ponds, separated by narrow bunds, fill the lowland. They create a geometric grid of water that makes this part of Hong Kong immediately recognisable from above.
Compact traditional villages, including the area around Tai Fu Tai Mansion, form tight clusters of small lanes. They contrast with the open ponds around them.
The Shenzhen River curves along the northern edge. Beyond it, the dense blocks of Shenzhen fill the frame and mark a striking change in scale.
