Sidney sits on the Great Miami River in western Ohio and is the seat of Shelby County. From above, the river curves past the west side of downtown, and the older streets form a neat grid around the courthouse square. Railway lines cut across the plan at an angle, and Interstate 75 runs down the western side, setting a clear line between the town and the flat farmland beyond it.
The square is the town's clearest landmark on paper. The Shelby County Courthouse stands at its centre. On one corner is the People's Federal Savings and Loan building, a small bank designed by Louis Sullivan and completed in 1918. It is one of the architect's so-called jewel boxes, a late series of banks he built for towns across the Midwest.

In the nineteenth century Sidney also grew up beside the Miami and Erie Canal, part of the waterway network that once linked Lake Erie with the Ohio River.

A single open block marks the heart of the grid. The streets around it are dense and regular, and the courthouse and Sullivan's bank make it a small architectural landmark.

Interstate 75 runs in a long, slightly curving line along the town's western side. On the map its interchanges and ramps are the most technical shapes, set against open farmland.
