Somerville is one of the most densely built cities in New England, and the map shows it. There are almost no empty spaces. Short residential streets are packed together, broken up by squares where main roads meet: Davis, Porter's northern edge, Union, Ball and Magoun. To the north the Mystic River and the waterfront at Assembly Row close off the grid.
The city is traditionally described as having seven hills. They show up in the street pattern as loops and bends where the roads curve around the rises. Prospect Hill is the most famous. On 1 January 1776 the Grand Union flag was raised there, often described as the first flag of the united colonies. Winter Hill and Spring Hill take their own place in the layout.
A Somerville map poster also shows the transport lines that cut through the city: the Community Path on an old rail route, the Green Line Extension, McGrath Highway and Interstate 93 along the eastern edge. Tufts University's campus on Walnut Hill sits on the border with Medford, where the quads and paths make a looser pattern.

The tight curve of streets around Prospect Hill marks the site where the Grand Union flag flew in 1776. A small park and tower still sit at the top.
Mystic River edge
Along the northern boundary, the river bends and the Assembly Row waterfront mark the end of the residential grid. They give the dense map a clean, open edge.
