Tantou sits in Songgang, in Shenzhen's Bao'an district, close to the northwestern edge of the city near Dongguan. From above, it is one of the densely built manufacturing communities that grew quickly as the Pearl River Delta industrialised. Blocks of factories and worker housing are packed tightly between wider arterial roads, and a few low green hills stay undeveloped among them.
Most of this street pattern is recent, which gives a Tantou map poster an unusual look. Instead of an old core with lanes spreading outwards, you get a patchwork of rectangular plots. Each one follows the logic of the estate it belongs to, so the grid changes direction from one block to the next as developers and planning phases shifted.
