Thiruthani lies in northern Tamil Nadu, near the border with Andhra Pradesh, in the Tiruvallur district. The town is organised around a hill whose summit is crowned by the Subramanya Swamy temple. The temple is one of the Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, and it draws large numbers of pilgrims all year round. A long flight of steps leads up to it, and tradition links their number to the days of the year. Festival days fill the town and the approaches to the hill.
