Tucson spreads across a wide desert basin in southern Arizona, surrounded by mountains: the Santa Catalinas to the north, the Rincons to the east, the Santa Ritas to the south and the Tucson Mountains to the west. The city is organised by a grid of major roads about a mile apart. Neighbourhoods fill each square, and development thins out toward the foothills.
Tucson is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in North America, and people have farmed near Sentinel Peak, known locally as A Mountain, for a very long time. Saguaro National Park protects giant cacti on both the east and west sides of the city. In 2015 Tucson became the first UNESCO City of Gastronomy in the United States.
