Vinaròs is the northernmost large town on the Valencian coast, just short of the border with Catalonia. Seen from above, its old centre forms a tight knot of streets around the main church, while newer blocks extend in a looser grid toward the sea and inland toward the orchards, the farm tracks and the main coastal road running north and south.
The shoreline is the defining line of the map. A harbour with long breakwaters projects into the Mediterranean, used by fishing boats as much as by leisure craft, and on either side the coast runs out in beaches and low rocky coves. The Cervol, often a dry riverbed, cuts a clear line through the town's edge before reaching the sea.
Vinaròs is widely known for its langostinos, the prawns landed at its port, and for a large carnival that fills the town each winter.
