Westmount occupies the southwestern flank of Mount Royal, and the map shows it plainly. Lower down, the streets form a fairly regular grid of long east–west avenues crossed by shorter north–south streets. Higher up, the grid loosens into winding crescents that follow the contours, and the lines grow shorter and more tangled as they approach the green summit.
The city is surrounded on every side by Montreal, yet it runs its own affairs. Westmount was merged into Montreal in 2002 and voted to become a separate municipality again in 2006. On paper its boundary is barely visible, but the change in street pattern and the calm, leafy blocks set it apart from the denser neighbourhoods around it.
