Willimantic is part of the town of Windham in eastern Connecticut, and it grew up along the Willimantic River, whose falls powered its nineteenth-century mills. From above, the river curves through the middle of the map, with the old downtown on one side, long mill buildings along the banks and residential streets climbing the slopes around them.
Its nickname, Thread City, comes from the American Thread Company, whose mills once made it a leading producer of cotton thread. The town is also known for the Frog Bridge, where large bronze frogs sit on giant thread spools, a nod to a colonial-era local legend. Eastern Connecticut State University occupies a hillside campus to the north-west of downtown.
