Yamatokōriyama lies on the flat floor of the Nara Basin, just southwest of Nara city. Its centre is a former castle town, and on the map the castle site shows as a compact area of moats and stone-walled enclosures. Around it, narrow merchant streets and old districts wind in a close, irregular pattern, while newer housing spreads outward across the plain.
The town is famous across Japan for goldfish. Farmers have bred goldfish here since the Edo period, and many shallow rectangular breeding ponds still dot the outskirts. The town hosts a national goldfish-scooping championship, and the fish appear on everything from street decorations to local souvenirs.
