Zikhron Ya‘aqov Map Poster & Print
Zikhron Ya‘aqov was founded in 1882 by Jewish immigrants from Romania. It soon came under the patronage of Baron Edmond de Rothschild, who named it in memory of his father, James (Ya‘aqov) Mayer de Rothschild. The town sits at the southern end of the Carmel range, and its plan follows the ridge: the old colony at the top, newer neighbourhoods spreading down the slopes.
The historic core is organised around a long main street lined with stone houses from the founding era. Today it is a pedestrian street of cafés and small shops. From above it reads as a clear spine crossed by short lanes. A Zikhron Ya‘aqov map poster shows how this straight axis contrasts with the curving roads that follow the contours of the surrounding hills.
Wine is central to the town's identity. The Carmel winery, which Rothschild founded here in the 1890s, is one of the oldest in the country. Just to the south, the Ramat HaNadiv memorial gardens hold the tomb of the Baron and his wife. On wider maps, vineyards, woodland and the drop toward the coastal plain and the sea complete the picture.
