Seen from above, Żory has two clear layers. At the centre sits a compact medieval core, an oval of short streets gathered around a square market place. The line where the town walls once stood can still be traced in the curve of the surrounding roads. Around this core, the map opens into the wider, more regular blocks of the modern town.
Żory received town rights in 1272, which makes it one of the older towns in Upper Silesia. The centre was badly damaged at the end of the Second World War. In the 1970s and 1980s the town grew quickly as housing for the region's coal industry, and that growth shows on the map as large estates of long residential blocks set among green space and wide access roads.
A Żory map poster shows that change in a single frame: the dense, rounded historic centre in the middle, estates spreading out on every side, and major roads running out towards Rybnik, Pszczyna and the rest of Silesia. At the edges the street network thins out into fields and patches of forest, which gives the composition a soft, open border rather than a hard city edge.

Planned housing estates
Large residential districts built during the town's postwar expansion surround the centre. From above they appear as repeated rectangular blocks, open courtyards and curving service roads, a pattern typical of Silesian towns of that period.
Roads and open edges
Main roads run outward from the centre towards neighbouring Silesian towns, and a motorway corridor passes along the town's edge. Beyond the built-up area the lines thin into farmland and woodland.
