Abū Ḩummuş lies in Beheira governorate, in the western Nile Delta between Damanhour and Kafr el-Dawwar. The land is completely flat and intensively irrigated, and on the map the town appears as a dense cluster of streets surrounded by the narrow strips of fields that cover the delta.
Water shapes everything here. Canals and irrigation channels run through and around the town in long straight lines, with smaller ditches branching off to feed the fields. Roads and a railway follow the same direction as the main waterways, so transport lines and water often run side by side.
