Al Hindīyah lies on the Euphrates in central Iraq, between Karbala and Hillah. Its map is organised around the river. The town extends along both banks, linked by bridges, and on either side lie irrigated fields, date palm groves and a network of canals. Seen from above, the green farmland contrasts sharply with the dry plain just beyond.
The town is closely linked to the Hindiyah Barrage, built across the Euphrates in the early twentieth century and later replaced by a newer structure. It controls water for irrigation across a large part of the middle Euphrates region. The name itself comes from the Hindiyah canal, a channel dug in the late eighteenth century to bring water toward the holy cities further south.

The river curves through the centre, the barrage crosses it in a firm straight line, and canals branch out into the fields.
