Al Khums lies on Libya's Mediterranean coast east of Tripoli, and its map is shaped first by the shoreline. The town runs along the water with a harbour at its edge, while streets extend inland in a looser pattern toward olive groves and farmland. The coastline, straight in places and broken by small headlands, gives the composition a strong upper edge.
Just east of the town lie the ruins of Leptis Magna, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the birthplace of the emperor Septimius Severus, who enriched it with a forum, a basilica and a harbour. On a map the ancient site forms a distinct area of its own beside the modern town.

Harbour
The port's breakwaters and quays appear as sharp geometric lines projecting into the sea, in contrast with the softer curves of the coast around them.
Leptis Magna
East of the town, the ruins of the Roman city occupy their own stretch of coast. They are a reminder that this shoreline had an important harbour long before the modern port.
