Alattūr lies in Palakkad district, the part of central Kerala where the hills of the Western Ghats open into a broad gap and the land flattens into rice country. From above, the town reads as a linear settlement. A main road carries most of the traffic, lanes branch off it at irregular angles, and the houses thin out quickly into cultivated land.

Irrigation channels and small streams trace thin lines through them, and a river of the Bharathapuzha basin winds past the town on its way west.
