Algiers wraps around a broad crescent bay on the Mediterranean, and its streets rise from the water in layers, following the hills of the Sahel behind. Along the harbour, an arcaded seafront avenue runs above the port. To the east, the Jardin d'Essai botanical garden and, further on, the Great Mosque of Algiers mark the coastline.
Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria, long called Alger la Blanche for its whitewashed buildings seen from the sea.
