Beaches run away to the north and east, and a long palm-lined promenade separates the harbour from the city. Behind it the grid of the modern centre spreads inland. On top of Benacantil stands the Castle of Santa Bárbara, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain. The Explanada de España, the seafront promenade, is paved with millions of tiles laid in a wave pattern. Explanada and harbour
The seafront promenade runs parallel to the port and marina. The piers, breakwaters and moorings create crisp geometric shapes along the water's edge.
