The sacred pool
The Amrit Sarovar around the Golden Temple appears as a crisp square of water at the centre of the old city, a rare geometric form among the winding lanes.

Amritsar Map Poster & Print
Amritsar has one of the most recognisable centres in India. At its heart lies the Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple, set in a square pool of water from which the city takes its name. Around it, the walled city is a close-knit maze of lanes, bazaars and courtyards, bounded by a ring road that follows the line of the old fortifications.
Beyond the old gates, the pattern changes. Wider roads, cantonment blocks and planned colonies spread outward, and the Grand Trunk Road runs past on its long route across the subcontinent. The contrast between the tight medieval core and the looser modern city is what gives an Amritsar map poster its strong sense of centre.
The city was founded in the sixteenth century by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, and remains the spiritual heart of Sikhism. Jallianwala Bagh, the site of the 1919 massacre, sits a short walk from the temple, and the Wagah border crossing with Pakistan lies to the west.

Walled city ring
A ring road traces the former city walls, enclosing a dense core of bazaars and alleys that reads as the darkest, most intricate part of the map.
Grand Trunk Road
One of Asia's oldest trade routes passes Amritsar, a long confident line that connects the city to Lahore in one direction and Delhi in the other.
