Ashuganj stands on the east bank of the Meghna, one of the great rivers of Bangladesh. From above, the water dominates. The broad channel, sandbars and smaller branches take up much of the frame, and the town sits along the bank as a dense strip of streets, jetties and industrial ground.
The town is best known as an energy and industrial centre. A large power station and fertiliser works occupy big, geometric sites near the river. Road and rail bridges cross the Meghna towards Bhairab on the opposite bank, making this one of the key crossings between the east of the country and Dhaka.
