Bahçelievler lies on the European side of Istanbul, west of the historic peninsula and inland from the Sea of Marmara. It is almost entirely built up, and on a map it appears as an unbroken field of small blocks and short streets. The D-100 highway, known locally as E-5, runs through it from east to west, a broad line dividing the district into northern and southern halves.
The name translates roughly as garden houses, a trace of its beginnings as a planned residential area of low-rise homes. Since then the district has grown far denser, with apartment buildings replacing much of the original housing. The street pattern remains mostly regular, with long parallel avenues and a fine grid of side streets filling the space between them.
Metro and rail lines cross the district, and metrobus stops line the highway.
