Baishikante Map Poster & Print
Baishikante lies in the Kashgar region of southwestern Xinjiang, on the edge of the Tarim Basin. Here the Taklamakan Desert meets a band of irrigated farmland fed by rivers coming down from the Pamir and Kunlun mountains. From above, the town sits within a patchwork of fields divided by canals and rows of poplars, the classic pattern of a Central Asian oasis.
Life in this part of Xinjiang is closely tied to water. Irrigation channels branch across the landscape, and villages and towns follow them in long, green strips. The population is largely Uyghur, and the region has for centuries been part of the network of oasis settlements that lined the southern Silk Road routes around the Tarim Basin.
A Baishikante map poster shows how people shaped this dry landscape. Straight roads and canals divide the land into regular fields, while the town's streets form a denser cluster within them. In black and white, the lines of irrigation and tree-lined roads give the map a quiet, ordered rhythm, with the desert implied beyond its edges.

Field patchwork
Regular rectangles of farmland surround the town on all sides, giving the map a geometric pattern that contrasts with the denser centre.
Poplar-lined roads
Rural roads run in straight lines between fields and villages, typical of the oasis landscapes of the western Tarim Basin.
