Barrancabermeja sits on the eastern bank of the Magdalena River in the Middle Magdalena region of Santander. It is widely known as Colombia's oil capital. The country's largest refinery, operated by Ecopetrol, occupies a large area beside the river, and the city grew around it. The surrounding landscape is low and wet. Ciénagas, shallow lakes and marshes connected to the river system, press against the urban area and influence where streets can go.
