Bassum is a market town in the Diepholz district of Lower Saxony, south of Bremen, in the flat to gently rolling country of the North German Plain. Its outline on a map is compact. The oldest landmark is Stift Bassum, a religious community for women founded in the ninth century, whose church still stands on raised ground in the town.
