Battambang lies on the Sangkae River in north-western Cambodia. The river winds through the town from south to north, and the centre is laid out on both banks, with the older commercial district on the western side. From above, the grid of streets gives way quickly to open rice fields, which stretch across the plain in every direction.
The town is known for its well-preserved colonial-era shophouses and for the surrounding countryside, often called the rice bowl of Cambodia. It is also home to Phare Ponleu Selpak, an arts school whose circus performances draw many visitors. The bamboo train, once a local improvised rail service, became one of its best-known attractions.

The older centre west of the river is laid out in a regular grid of streets lined with shophouses. It forms the densest and most orderly part of the design.
Rice plain
Beyond the edge of town, the land opens into flat fields and scattered villages. The open space around the town frames the composition and gives it room to breathe.
