Bedok New Town is one of Singapore's earlier public housing towns, developed from the 1970s in the east of the island. Its structure is easy to read from above. The town centre, with its market, shops and bus interchange, sits next to Bedok MRT station. Around it, housing is grouped into neighbourhood clusters, and major roads divide the town into sectors.
To the south the town reaches toward the coast. There, East Coast Park runs along reclaimed land beside the sea, and the East Coast Parkway follows the shoreline. The contrast between the orderly housing blocks and the long, smooth coastal edge gives the map a clear sense of direction, from the town centre down to the water.
