Behbahān lies in the east of Khuzestan Province, where the flat lowlands of south-western Iran meet the first folds of the Zagros Mountains. On a map the town appears as a solid block of streets on level ground, with ridges rising beyond it and farmland and orchards stretching across the plain around it.
The centre has an older core of tighter, irregular streets, while newer districts are arranged in broad rectangular blocks along wide avenues. Main roads lead toward Ahvaz, the provincial capital, and toward the Persian Gulf coast. A Behbahān map poster is anchored by a compact town with long, straight lines reaching outward.
People have lived in this area for a very long time. The Marun River flows nearby, and the remains of Arrajan, an important city of the Sasanian and early Islamic periods, lie just outside the modern town. In 1982, work on a dam on the Marun uncovered an Elamite tomb here, one of the region's notable archaeological finds.

The river runs close to the town, drawing a winding line across the plain through a landscape that has supported settlements since ancient times.
