Belagavi lies in northwestern Karnataka, close to the borders with Maharashtra and Goa, on a plateau at the edge of the Western Ghats. On a map the city has several distinct parts: a dense old town of narrow lanes, a spacious cantonment with wide roads and green plots, and newer residential areas extending outward along the main highways.
At the centre of the older area is Belagavi Fort, a walled enclosure surrounded by a moat, whose outline is easy to read from above. Inside it stands the Kamal Basadi, a Jain temple with a finely carved lotus ceiling. The cantonment, established during British rule, still keeps its lower density and tree-lined layout.
Belagavi is also home to the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, where the Karnataka legislature holds sessions, and is known for kunda, a local milk sweet. A Belagavi map poster shows a city of layered periods, with lakes, the fort and the cantonment set against rising, greener country to the west.

The cantonment has broad roads, large plots and generous green space, clearly different from the tighter streets of the old town next to it.
Lakes and tanks
Several lakes and water tanks appear across the city, including Kote Kere beside the fort, adding soft, rounded shapes among the streets.
