Bihtā lies west of Patna in Bihar, on the flat plain near the Son river, not far from where it joins the Ganges. On a map, the older town is a dense cluster of lanes around the railway and main road. Around it, new development has spread in more regular patterns, and fields still fill much of the land between the built-up areas.
In recent years the town has become known as the home of the Indian Institute of Technology Patna, whose campus was built here. The campus appears on the map as a distinct planned area with its own internal roads, very different from the older town's lanes. Bihtā also has a railway station on the main line west of Patna, which has helped its growth.
